deadHYPE known best for championing “BBG” (beats, bass and grime) and their multi-disciplinary approach have made them the go-to musicians and event curators in Berlin. We catch up with Bernie founder of creative collective deadHYPE on how COVID-19 is affecting his community in Berlin and how he's spending his time in isolation.
How has COVID-19 affected your local community?
It’s been quite tough, as all the independent stores have had to close and all events have been cancelled. A lot of freelancers are getting laid off or are concerned when they will get their next cheque from, and so many planned trips have been cancelled, people aren’t even able to fly home due to so many closed borders. There are some cool initiatives from the government to help people stay afloat, which I am grateful for, but overall business has taken a slight halt due to us all staying at home (indefinitely).
How would you describe your hometown right now?
I feel like people are getting into the next gear of creativity. Either plotting away at home or creating online solutions to physical problems such as exhibition becoming online, live streams of artists etc.
What are you cooking/ordering in most?
I heard McDonald’s closed in the UK, so I have found myself ordering from time to time, just in case.
What are some good books & films that help you escape?
Ozark on Netflix is great. If you like trash TV, I highly recommend ‘90 Day Fiancé’ and I’ve also started watching Naruto with my son.
Favourite podcast, album or mix?
Really been enjoying this set by NTS.
Tips on keeping up your fitness & mental wellness?
I feel like it’s very easy to get sucked into the toxicity of social media and endless timeline scrolling during a time like this, what really works for me is really calling and speaking to friends whenever I think of them, if they post something funny online or just to check in.
Where are you looking forward to travelling to after this is all over?
I optimistically booked a flight to Ghana in December, so fingers crossed.
One thing you’d like to achieve whilst in isolation?
To try and finish reading all the books I bought this year.
