A Guide to Portland by Lillian Hardy

"Portland feels like an oasis. We have everything. An hour in any direction will take you to the mountains, the ocean, the desert, canyonlands or old-growth forest. Beauty is abundant, people are freaky, and yes, it rains." Multi-disciplinary creative Lillian Hardy is known for her art direction, casting, and for founding Super -- a talent agency for emerging artists -- in addition to Heavy Set, a creative production studio based in Portland. Her collaborators include Nike, Adidas Originals, Fendi and more who have noticed her work which takes inspiration from the natural world and optimism for the future. When it comes to travelling and exploring Lillian tells us, "it’s important to crack open, get lost and tap into something outside of yourself." Read on to see her favourite places to explore and enjoy when in Portland.

Sauvie Island: Collin’s Nude Beach

Don’t go in the bushes alone. Bring watermelon and a float. Keep an eye out for River Man, the local legend. You’ll know him when you see him - minimal loincloth, greasy tan and well-endowed.

Coquine

Go in the morning, get breakfast (ask for the house made hot sauce) and get the cookie to-go. It’s award winning! Take that cookie on a walk up Mt. Tabor! Say hi to the trees.

Courier Coffee

PDX is coffeeland. This place is no bullshit, the best coffee in America. Oh and on Saturday’s the owner’s wife spins otherworldly Kakigori shaved ice. Don’t mess around and take a bean bag home with you.

Kinokunyia

I spend hours here nerding out on stationary, organizational tools and pens. They have the best selections of paper, manga and tiny sticker books.

Casa Diablo Vegan Strip Club

This place is out near my studio, so we hit it the most. Be prepared, it gets very rowdy! The dancers are amazingly strong, completely nude and lovely to talk to. Don’t forget, tip every song-- $2 bills only! Throw down more and the show is yours.

CSPP: Center for Study & Preservation of Palestine

A local event space, gallery and grocery store that supports Palestinian artists and activists.

Someday PDX

Fresh oysters on Sunday and mind blowing cocktails.

Heavy Set

This is my studio. We throw events, art shows, pop-ups and have a range of fun toys to play with. Come by for tea, stay for a while.

Navarre

Order the baked fish and a white Manhattan.

Peoples Co-op Wednesday Market

Live out your organic dad dreams here. Bring cash and a tote. Get the steamy corn :-)

Columbia River Gorge

Get out of town and into a hike: Coyote Wall or Dog Mountain. Chase some waterfalls on the old highway then get lunch at White Salmon Bakery. Stop by a winery if you’ve got the time! Hiyu is great.
