Amsterdam Community Guide

Amsterdam is a favourite European hotspot for the Trippin community. From Dutch renaissance architecture to horse shaped canals, the city holds it own unique charm with an eclectic mix of art galleries, restaurants and of course coffee shops. This guide is a selection of top spots co-signed by our community.

Sadly Amsterdam is suffering from over tourism, with over 18 million visitors passing through its doors annually. To ensure you are conscious about your footprint, we recommend visiting outside of peak season and opting for a hotel/ hostel instead of an airbnb where possible.

Cultural hubs include Zeedijk/ China Town, Straatjes, Haarlemmerdijk and De Pijp.

Local Phrases:

“Faka”/ “Fawaka”- how are you (walking)? Derived from Surinamese.

“Patta”- Sneaker/ Shoe- also derived from Surinamese.

G's Brunch Boat

"It would be rude not to have a Bloody Mary with your brunch when they have 12 to choose from. You could go classic, but we’d recommend making things slutty and adding in an oyster"

De Japanner

"Get loads of plates to share with the table. We recommend trying the squid frites, pork belly and beef tayaki"

Patta

"Pinnacle of Amsterdam street culture - best place to go for sneakers"

Warung Spang Makandra

"Cosy place, deliciously honest food and won’t burn a hole in your wallet (plus the ribs are killer)"

BAK

"At BAK, they’re mad about the quality of the produce. If you’re a real foodie, definitely treat yourself to the 6 course set menu"

De School

"A club favoured by the locals, which also boasts a fine-dining type restaurant"

Thaise Snackbar Bird

"Queues are inevitable when it’s the best Thai food in the city. There is also the option to enjoy your food on the benches out the front of the restaurant if there is no space inside (which is by no means a compromise)"

de Ceuvel

"The PERFECT place to spend an afternoon. The cafe is almost totally veggie, as it prioritises sustainability above anything else. However, if you are a meat eater, be sure to try their ‘unwanted goose’ on the menu, which is their way of using the wild geese that are culled at Schipol airport!"

Foam

"Coordinate your timings so that you can go on one of their insightful (and free) guided tours"

Dignita

"Eat well, do good is Dignita‘s motto. Apart from serving delicious brunches at their two locations in Amsterdam, Dignita is part of the ‘Not for Sale’ social enterprise, which is committed to providing professional training to vulnerable individuals and social groups, helping them to integrate into new cultures"

Restaurant De Kas

Restaurant de Kas' menu changes daily according to what is available from its surrounding greenhouse and gardens, all ingredients are locally and sustainably sourced. Book ahead as this one is popular"

Instock

"Come through for one of Amsterdams first zero waste restaurants, at Instock they collect surplus food from producers (think odd shaped cucumbers that supermarkets turn down) or food that has a shorter than sellable shelf life, and put it directly into their daily changing menus"

FC Hyena

"Go hungry and be sure to try a range of the delicious food on offer before you sit down for your film"
