You tend to bump into people who miss home as much as I miss home, or people looking for a taste of the Caribbean, so it’s not very hard to connect. For me, this is the most authentic Jamaican/Caribbean restaurant, they don’t serve food without it being spicy, and most Germans they like food without spice, which is totally fine. I had a chat with the owner and he told me he doesn't like cooking without spices because you come for the most authentic meal. I’d recommend the oxtail.

It’s an African spot with multiple restaurants and bars, it’s pretty cool you can just hang out for hours, you feel like you’re literally not in Berlin. YAAM is centred around Black people. They curate this vibe where people can come and perform and sell their art, this is one spot where I’ve definitely felt connected to culture.

They make a lot of Caribbean-style drinks and cocktails it’s cool to pop in there if you don’t just want the average cocktail, and you want a rum punch.

The Caribbean Art Collection is an incredible experience. From being greeted with wine by the owners to hearing stories about each piece and its origins, my visit was nothing short of special. Being able to unfold what inspired all the different pieces collected and donated by artists all over the Caribbean really gives perspective on how culture can be exported through art.

In my opinion, Badehaus really highlights a lot of the underground scene surrounding upcoming talent in Berlin. I’ve discovered great acts here. It’s perfect for a spontaneous Saturday night.

Where it's at in the summer. BBQs, basketball, music, mates, beers, all of that.

Many different walks of life in this spot - skateboarders, NTS radio station, Vortex Jazz club, Ethiopian food, etc.

Incredible brutalist architecture, feels like a dystopian land. Great to take pics in and around, great exhibitions in the art gallery.

Bigger and more relaxed than London Fields. Beautiful, huge park and gorgeous all year round.

Indoor and outdoor market with lovely lunch spots.

A proper market, fresh produce, cheap and proper.

Another gorgeous East London park, this one's got deer!

BEqueer is a club with drag queen performances. Always a cute crowd to party [with].

More than a welcome and safe [space] for queer people. All of us, we always party in this venue/club.

This club has the same vibe as BEqueer, but with more focus on the performances.

This is my favorite thrift store and one I only discovered earlier this year. They've got everything from vintage clothing, to film cameras and super 8's, to vinyls and record players all at really affordable prices. Highly recommend this space as you'd spend the whole day perusing through wonderland.

Another store with a plethora of vintage stuff, they have rad discounts on a weekly basis on clothes and accessories, among many other things.

This is the scene in Mean Girls where Regina George imagines all the girls in high school mauling each other like animals, Dunusa is a jungle and one you should prepare all your energy for as it's wild but you will find so many gems at really cheap prices. Always remember to only have cash with you.

Not only will you meet the cutest little cats but you will step into a big store full of amazing vintage clothing and the store depends solely on donations by supporting 30 charity organisations. Your money would be going to great causes for both people and pets in the neighbouring communities!

Another thrift store that supports charity and offers a wide array of cool clothing to look through.

Every Saturday, you can find thrift markets at Kitcheners with cool styles ranging from denim looks to '80's aesthetics.

Literally anywhere in Maboneng, you will find really lovely thrift stores and during weekends they are alight with markets on the street with incredible styles, and you can find your way to café's and restaurants as you shop.

You should visit a Fortuna Düsseldorf football game in our stadium. Fortuna fans are one of the best, and the atmosphere is fantastic.

For simply sitting in a café and people-watching. You’ll figure out why once you’ve experienced it for yourself.

One of the last 'cool' clubs with interesting, different music, in comparison to experiences you might have in your regular club.

A forest, for its forest! and long quiet walks.

Just get a bicycle or inline skates and enjoy. Just be aware that suddenly you might end up in the Netherlands.

We love this wine bar with a diverse and musical crowd. Unexpected nights here have led to some of the most exciting music collabs in Paris.

This is a special place to take visiting artists. It’s a speakeasy bar that uses screens to imitate an actual busy train snaking through the Indian countryside, with passengers hopping off and on. Disorienting in the best way! Great cocktails and tapas.

One of our favourite places to catch up on music and unwind off-hours. You’ll always run into someone working in the music scene here.

A great industrial-style bar where you’ll find conversations flowing on music, politics and culture. Gives Berlin vibes.

A floating café and botanical library. Our favourite escape to, surprisingly, turn off the music, chill out and read.

An absolute hidden gem! We look forward to any excuse to pop in this restaurant for excellent Armenian food that doesn’t break the bank. A constant temptation just around the corner from our office.

We love the natural wines and ever-changing menu at Des Terres, where they are passionate about engaging.

This is one of our favourite Chinese restaurants in Paris. The plates and drinks endlessly move overhead, and it’s hard to not 'over order'. A must-visit for authentic vibes, hot delicious food and pure satisfaction.

Johannesburg has a serious lack of establishments that cater particularly to the LGBTQIA+ community, but Tennis Club is one of the venues that are not just paying lip service to “queer friendly” – they really are. It’s one of the few places I feel comfortable rocking up at in a crop top and loads of eyeliner without a worry in the world. In addition to that, they often host gay-themed parties and dress-up parties in general, which are always fun and go right into the early hours of the morning. Tennis Club has often played host to LE GRAND BALL.

Not particularly my cup of tea, but this is a very popular spot. They play all the pop hits and they sometimes have live entertainment in the form of drag performers. It’s located in Illovo, one of the more affluent suburbs, north of the city, and prides itself in being an “open-minded” venue that is welcoming to everyone; gay or not. They have a huge bar, chic interior design, VIP booths and male strippers add to the raunchy, but fun atmosphere.

Black-owned galleries are generally hard to come by anywhere in South Africa, making artist BANELE KHOZA’s project space a welcome anomaly on the cultural landscape. They often host group and solo exhibitions by young, emerging artists and emerging creative across various disciplines including fine art, photography, performance, illustration and more. Every now and again, they also host talks, with an aim at facilitating dialogue around art and design.

This bar located on Melville’s popular 7th Street strip is not gay-owned, neither does it sell itself as a gay bar, but it has become notorious for attracting the community nonetheless. For years, it has been like the gateway to Johannesburg’s POC LGBT community. On Thursday nights in particular, students from the surrounding University communities as well as professionals from all over the city congregate here for affordable drinks and the latest queer favourite pop hits. It gets seriously packed, so arriving before 10pm at least is the only way to guarantee yourself space, or even entrance.

Known as Johannesburg’s second oldest bar, Kitchener’s is also probably one of the city’s most progressive with a music programme that caters to different tastes. It’s a sanctuary for the city’s underground scenes and the queer scene is no exception. The bar is home to Pussy Party, for instance, a monthly party catering specifically to femme revellers and a DJ lineup that is exclusively femme. More than just a party, Pussy Party has become more of a movement.

This is without a doubt my favourite place to go dancing on the weekends, and so far the only place I know of in the city that is strictly about the music, and zero frills. Third Place hosts some of my personal favourite parties and Vogue Nights Jozi, a popular ball that redefined queer nightlife in Johannesburg.

On Saturdays, the city central suburb of Braamfontein comes alive as this market breathes life into it. Throngs of people gather at this market to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the variety of food, clothing and art stalls as well as live music out in the sun. Neighbourgoods is the sister market to Cape Town’s Old Biscuit Mill based market of the same name, owned by entrepreneurs Cameron Munro and Justin Rhodes who started both markets in order to give market access to small designers, and producers prioritising quality local produce.

When the market closes around 3pm, Great Dane, a bar across the street from the Neighbourgoods Market, is where you’ll find Joburg’s young and fabulously gay, dancing well into the night. Keep it casual, sure, but be sure to put your best foot forward because everyone here looks beautiful as fuck! Although Great Dane is not a gay bar, Saturday afternoons have specifically and affectionately become known as ‘Gay Dane’. You have to be sure to make it there as soon as possible before the market crowd pours in, making it virtually impossible to find space or to get a drink at the bar. You’ll often find a long queue outside as people wait their turn to go inside.

In the northern suburb of Craighall, the Royale is local favourite and my personal drinking hole on any day of the week. They’ve got great food on offer and the courtyard is a summer time staple for Joburg’s young and well-heeled. The speakeasy at the back of the restaurant is where you’ll most probably find me and my friends dancing, or even hijacking the playlist. Everyone feels at home here and it really feels like a small, close knit community where everyone comes to have fun in a safe space.

Montevideo

At the southernmost city in the Americas, in Montevideo bay, very close to the busy city center, there's this Breakwater structure in which I love to spend time, unplugging myself from everything while watching and sampling sounds from the docks, birds and fishermen around.

I won't lie, I am a huge fan of South American cemeteries, visiting them in each city I play gigs at. In Montevideo, there's one I'm particularly fond of, Cementerio del Buceo. The dichotomy between massive architecture next to decaying graves with plastic flowers, cats always running around. Most of my favourite local musicians and poets from past centuries are buried there.

In the backyard of a fantastic art museum, there's the Japanese garden of Montevideo. A beautiful spot filled with bamboo trees, cherry blossoms and orchids, blended with Uruguayan national trees such as Ceibo. Love to go there with a good book and stare at the koi fishes for hours.

The flea market culture is quite remarkable in Uruguay. Every Sunday, you will find Tirstan Narvaja market right in the city center. I visit it every weekend ever since I can remember, walking kilometres in search of thrift clothes, vinyls, music gear and the most random things you can imagine.

Undoubtfully every Uruguayan has a fond memory of this spot. Right next to the amusement park and the beach, there is a lovely tiny lake with small boats that you can rent, surrounded by native trees, musicians playing around, tiny little islands with rabbits, and a castle (that is actually a library) in the middle.

Located in the oldest neighborhood in town, Cafe Brasilero is a very inspiring artistic bar founded in 1877, with typical art nouveau decorations and incredible food. It's been said that many famous writers from around the globe have started their books there.

Montevideo is known for venues shutting down in the blink of an eye, so most parties are itinerant. But luckily there's Tundra Bar, a place where you can go see the most experimental underground acts around, perhaps a rave here and there, and in the evening you can eat amazing vegan food.

There's a guy called Dj Okapi running that. He deals with people like 'Awesome Tapes from Africa' and sells that very authentic African music.

Used to be a woman's prison in the apartheid days but it’s now a monument. They host events there and its very nice.

In South Africa, we’ve got a tendency of putting a lot of couches and sofas in clubs and sometimes you miss when it’s just a sound system and dance floor. And club is one of those very few raw clubs that you get. It's a proper night club you know.

Has a nice dance floor. They’re very open minded and book a lot of underground DJ’s and musicians.

If you want a night out in the township, this should be your first stop. Rands is one of the best live music venues in the city and a great place to experience a night out over some drinks and some of SA’s biggest musicians.

If you’re interested in hiking this is an entry level trail. There’s a beautiful view of the ocean and the city when you reach the peak. It’s really pretty around sundown.

This is a great spot for people who want to experience some of Cape Town’s alternative/underground music events. The best event to attend there is called Prime, so keep an eye on their socials.

This is probably the most popular bar in town. They have great music from an eclectic line up of local (and some international) djs. Start off at the one in Kloof Street around 6/7pm for sundowners and make your way down the road to the one on loop street around 10pm for the rest of the night. If you just want a chilled night out, stick to Kloof Street.

If you’re into markets/food festivals this is your spot on Saturday mornings. There are local bands, food stalls and tons of independent retailers selling (often local) goods.

Observatory is often referred to as the bohemian centre of Cape Town, because of all the students and backpackers it attracts. With the many bars on Lower Main Road, its definitely a must see for people looking to meet new people and interact with the creative community.

If you’re a fan of nature, you might want to make a stop here with the whole family. This is easily one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the country. Depending on the season they also host live concerts on the grass.
