Can a landscape become an active part of a music performance? At Nextones, we're talking to Kenichi Iwasa about his site-responsive approach to composition.

The Japanese musician, who is based in London, will perform with his newly developed hybrid instrument - somewhere between a flute and a horn - at the debut of his work ‘+PONERE’ in the medieval village of Ghesc during Nextones festival. The work is developed in collaboration with visual artist and lighting designer Charlie Hope.

After Friday's inaugural performance, Trippin's Seb Gabe will host a conversation with Kenichi, exploring how he composes with place, turning the landscapes of Nextones into an active part of the performance as atmosphere, acoustics and natural conditions shape the sound in real time.

Date: Friday, 17 July

Time: 12:30

Location: Borgo di Ghesc Stage, Nextones

This year marks the 13th edition of Nextones, which takes place from 16 - 19 July, with a series of different site-specific performances across the Ossola valley in northern Italy, roughly 2-hour drive from Milan.

The programme includes a joint performance between Egyptian singer and poet Abdullah Miniawy & French producer Simo Cell; Italian producer Alessandro Adriani teams up with choreographer Ariella Vidach for 'Koppelia' and Cafe OTO regular Daniel Blumberg will perform a live piano concert, fresh from his Oscar-winning triumph for scoring The Brutalist.

Sites of immersive listening and performance include the modern thermal baths of Premia, the natural canyons of Orridi di Uriezzo, the ruins of medieval village Ghesc, and, for the first time, the 17th century oratory of San Marco in the hamlet of Veglio.
