Born and raised in Athens, Christina founded IT'S A SHIRT in 2020 following her art and textile studies. She describes her project as "not a clothing brand, but a lifestyle which concentrates on conscious customers and human beings you want to be totally aware of what they wear".

Growing up close to the port in Piraeus, Christina has spent a lot of her time strolling around neighbourhoods and discovering hidden spots and stores around the city. With a rich cultural lens of Athens, she shares her top low-key spots for food and drink; from where to buy the best quality bread to the best traditional tavernas.

Greece

The birthplace of democracy and plenty of other big ideas thought up by the likes of Aristotle and Socrates that provide the bedrock of societies today, Athens was – and always will be – a creative cornucopia with a radical edge. Concrete apartment buildings fringed with sun-bleached awnings surround ancient architecture that have seen the comings and goings of different civilizations, wars and crises. In Athens you’re never far from a taverna packed with locals pouring wine from carafes to accompany plates piled high with Greek Salad drenched in local olive oil and grilled sardines. Streets are lined with outdoor terraces where people sit, smoke and chat well into the night with friends, family and people they have just met. 

In recent years, Athens has provided a home for creatives hailing from Greece and beyond to develop their practises – one-room galleries, design studios and artist-in-residence programs are cropping up all over the city. Athens has long been overlooked by the hordes of tourists that head to the islands every summer, deemed a stop-off destination on route to sun, sea and sand, a reality which has enabled the creative scene to flourish without the strain of overtourism.

There are not a lot of spots in Exarchia where you can buy good quality bread. However BLACK SALAMI is quite a new entry and makes amazing bread as well as good espresso to take away. Try the focaccia and the avocado toast. Definitely pay a visit and grab your breakfast if you stay around.

This is very old pastry shop just around the corner of my store transfers you to an old Athenian scenery. Wooden decoration, assistants with uniforms, long glass windows, smell of biscuits. If you pass by, try their fresh chocolate cream, the traditional rice cream and the squared tiny praline bytes! To die for!!

Two brothers own this cafe. The younger one, Makis, can make you amazing espresso and let you know more tips about Athens. In case you need a sugar boost , try their apple pie!! Last but not least , there you can find a well curated selection of international magazines.
